Periodontal maintenance is initiated following periodontal therapy (scaling and root planning). Typically, periodontal maintenance includes an update of the medical and dental histories along with a soft tissue examination, removal of bacterial plague and calculus, and selective root planning and scaling. These procedures are performed at monthly intervals to assist the patient in maintaining good oral health.
